Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland -- both of whom returned to make 28 Years Later -- 28 Days Later starred future Oscar winner Cillian Murphy. Murphy portrayed Jim, a bicycle courier who ended up in a coma following a traffic accident. When he awakened from the coma, Jim discovered that he was in a very different world that had been severely affected by the Rage Virus: a contagious and aggression-inducing virus causing a widespread societal breakdown.

Murphy starred alongside James Bond and Pirates of the Caribbean franchise star Naomie Harris and decorated actor Brendan Gleeson in what was considered a game-changer for the zombie genre. 28 Days Later made more than 10 times its budget at the box office, earning $82.8 million worldwide. The film also garnered an 87% critical rating and an 85% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

When the 28 Years Later trilogy was confirmed in 2024, one of the first questions many fans had was whether Murphy would reprise his role as Jim in any of the new movies. Though 28 Years Later doesn't feature Murphy, Boyle confirmed he will appear in the trilogy in the future. The current film will be followed by 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which opens in theaters on January 16, 2026, and an untitled third film that remains in development.

28 Years Later is coming off a strong opening weekend, earning back its $60 million budget over its first three days in cinemas. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, 28 Years Later has proved itself to be a worthy sequel, earning a higher critical rating (89%) on Rotten Tomatoes than 28 Days Later.
